One of the things that I love the most about being an alternative wedding photographer is that it is a job full of surprises. I had been excited enough at the thought of photographing my first festival wedding in Essex but when the bride told me that she was planning a secret helicopter ride as a surprise for her husband-to-be, I could not believe my luck! I had dreamt of flying in a helicopter since I was a kid! I must say it was just as I imagined it - I did not know though that looking through a viewfinder could make you feel sick that quickly.
Whenever I shoot an alternative wedding in London, I go venue scouting beforehand in order to find photogenic portrait locations. However when I shoot alternative weddings in Essex or elsewhere in the U.K., I discover the venues on the day. If I am lucky enough I have some time to have a walk around and find suitable spots for portraits. In this particular example, when the bride asked me if I knew of any suitable location in the area I just replied that the best place for wedding portraits would be ‘in the middle of nowhere’. I am so glad she agreed with my suggestion. That is precisely where the helicopter pilot took us! There was only one small platform in the middle of the fields for us to land on. Although I am naturally more attracted to urban wedding portraits, I must confess that I had a fantastic time being ‘in the middle of nowhere’ with just fields and water to ‘work’ with.
Here is a selection of my favourite photos of the ‘session’. Enjoy!
