The first wedding of the year is always special to me. It reminds me of the first day at school – it is exciting and stressful at the same time. I usually feel stressed when I am on my way to photographing a wedding however the great thing is as soon as I start shooting the tension vanishes.
Quite a few alternative weddings that I shoot are simple low key weddings and this lesbian wedding in London was one of them. It was a Hackney Town Hall wedding with close friends and relatives. The lovely brides got ready on their own at an East London flat they had hired for the occasion. This unusual situation made for some intimate getting ready pictures.
It was the first time I was photographing a wedding at Hackney Town Hall so as I normally do I went scouting the venue a few days before the ceremony. Although live events are unpredictable I like to be as prepared as possible by getting a feel of the wedding venue and an idea of its lighting and also by looking for potential photogenic locations for urban portraits. On the actual wedding day I do my best to work as quickly as possible as I know how fast time flies when you are having fun!
I love the portraits I took of this alternative couple. There are good examples of the style I have been developing for the past year or so: on one hand, indoors portraits using available artificial light and on the other hand, urban wedding photography.
Here are some of my favourite photos of the day. Enjoy!
