Walthamstow Wetlands Wedding

A boho style wedding in London with a humanist wedding ceremony at Hackney Town Hall and a fun informal party at Walthamstow Wetlands, an industrial wedding venue in North London.

Walthamstow Wetlands Wedding

“Thank you so, so much for the photos! We love them! It’s such a joy looking through them and re-living the day! I’ve kept browsing through them today and then realising I have a huge smile on my face. Our families and crews love them too. Lots of people remarked on how tirelessly you worked on the day, and we really appreciate all the work and creativity you’ve put in. We will certainly treasure these photos for years to come.”

Non-traditional wedding plans

Here is Sarah and Dom’s initial enquiry:

“We are Sarah and Dom – we’re coming back to London (where we met three years ago) to get married in July and we love the look of what you do. Are you available on Saturday 14th July? We’re having our ceremony at 12:45 at Hackney Town Hall, then moving on to Walthamstow Wetlands for the afternoon/evening reception.
I don’t know how I’d describe the style… hopefully fun! Fairly relaxed, but with lots of guests (up to 200 by the end of the day!) and a little bit alternative (two of our friends will be officiating as we’ll be doing the legal part in the Netherlands where we live now).”

During our first meeting at Walthamstow Wetlands, I learnt a bit more about Sarah and Dom’s plans for their big day. There would be a treasure hunt organised at the reception venue, two sets of speeches and ice cream instead of a wedding cake. Also, all the ‘vegetable-themed’ table decorations would be handmade.

Artistic DIY

Sarah actually drew and printed all the motives for the table plan, menu, place mats and sustainable wedding favours (i.e. small packets of vegetable seeds). In the meantime, Dom’s dad created a set of matching clay vegetables as centre pieces for each of the tables.

Eco-friendly wedding

They were keen on having an eco-friendly wedding. So they made choices like using public transport between venues, celebrating somewhere that was easy for the majority of their friends and family to get to by train, using local suppliers and having a vegetarian menu as they didn’t want their party to be an excuse to negatively impact the environment.

Humanist ceremony

Sarah and Dom had a humanist ceremony in the Council Chamber. Two of their friends offered to officiate and another two performed a song for them. There were several readings by family members and Sarah and Dom exchanged vows that they had prepared earlier.

Walthamstow Wetland wedding reception

If you are like me and you love industrial wedding venues, you wouldn’t be disappointed. The Victorian engine house at Wathamstow Wetlands is quite spectacular. It was the perfect place for Sarah and Dom’s large wedding: a unique venue, full of character, set within a 221-hectare nature reserve.

Party time

As big fans Britpop, Sarah and Dom had picked TFI Britpop to perform some classic songs by Oasis, Blur, Pulp, Suede, The Verve, Kula Shaker, Ocean Colour Scene and many others, at their wedding.

Everyone had a fantastic time and danced like it was 1995 all over again!
