Here’s everything you need to know about ‘getting ready’ photos to help you make up your mind.

What are ‘getting ready’ pictures?
Well, to me, prep shots are a record of everything that happens before you arrive at the ceremony venue.
I hate cheesy ‘getting ready’ photos…
So do I!
Right now, you are probably thinking of a dress hanging from a tree, shoes on a window sill or rings on bushes… You won’t find any of these in my portfolio. I do love shooting details, though. There is no storytelling, without meaningful details.
As an alternative wedding photographer, prep shots are authentic intimate moments with your favourite people!
Do I really need ‘getting ready’ photos?
No, you don’t!
Just like you don’t NEED group shots, or couple shots, or photos of the party, you don’t need ‘getting ready’ shots.
It is your wedding, YOU decide what is important to you.
My approach to wedding photography is to document your day in a quirky way whether it starts with you getting ready or arriving at the wedding ceremony venue. Either way is absolutely fine by me.
Having said that…
A true record of your wedding starts with you in your jammies feeling nervous about the day ahead and finishes with you showing your best moves on the dance floor!
Are ‘getting ready’ photos worth it?
Yes, definitely…
if you feel self-conscious in front of a camera
Having me around while you are getting ready will reassure you about the way I work. It will give you time to get used to being photographed and to hearing me ‘clicking around’. So, by the time you walk down the aisle, I’ll just be part of the furniture.
if you want a record of the ‘behind the scenes’
So other people, especially your partner, get to have a glimpse at a part of the wedding they were not involved in.
if you are getting ready with your nearest and dearest
Whether it’s just you and your partner or family members you don’t see very often or friends from overseas, you might want to remember these special moments.
if you are getting ready at home
This gives me an insight into ‘your world’ and allows me to document a specific time and place in your life as you are likely to move out at some point.
if you are getting ready at a great place
If you’ve booked a cool airbnb or a fancy hotel, it might be a good idea to take advantage of the photogenic backdrop for some unique photos.
How long do ‘getting ready’ photos take?
Don’t worry, I don’t need to be with you from the moment you get up in the morning! About an hour before leaving for the ceremony is generally enough to capture the mood and some special moments.
Okay, but…
It must feel awkward being photographed while getting ready…
Well, not more than being followed around by your wedding photographer for a whole day!
Luckily for you I have developed a ‘non creepy’ approach: relaxed, friendly and as unobtrusive as possible. Also, I always ask if you want me there while you are slipping into your dress.
I’m not sure how I should behave…
Just be yourself and enjoy the moment with your loved ones! I won’t be in your face. And I won’t ask you to pose – ever!
